Winter Uniforms
Our students have switched to winter uniforms at school this week. This involves wearing a long sleeved shirt and tie. If today is any indication I am going to spend a significant amount of time, showing kids how to do up ties, reminding them to do them up and other general nagging about the dress code. It drives me nuts and is the least enjoyable part of being a co-ordinator. Why do they feel a need to walk around half undressed? Shirts unbuttoned and ties at half mast. It can’t be about individuality, cause they all want to do it.
I’ve been irritable today. It’s possibly just feeling like a nagging mother, yet perhaps the ‘w’ word - winter, is creeping up. I had better get on to that Winter Survival kit, I suggested when I read Develop a Strategic Plan for Happiness: The Clearing Space. I’ve been thinking about what kinds of things, besides chocolates and soup, would make winter more tolerable. Please feel free to make some suggestions for me.

I think I prefer the all year uniform. The only change is a pair of long pants instead of shorts, and a windcheater over the polo shirt. Easy.
Mind you… primary schools can get away with it more, probably.
Primary school sounds good re uniforms, Mr V. Lucky I like teenagers so much or I might consider defecting right now!
Thanks for reading my blog. I too, taught school for twenty years. I quit at age 48 last spring. It’s odd to think you’re starting to think about winter when, here in the U.S., we’re still trying to get spring started! Warm fires, fuzzy sweaters, and a cuddly boxer get me through the winter.
Thanks for the link Joh! I think a winter survival kit is a terrific idea, mine would have good books, good music, maybe a nice red wine every now and again, good friends, going for long walks and a nice mohair throw rug (which I am hinting at strongly for mothers day:)
do the boys also have their pants below their bottoms!?? what a crzy fashion that is!
winter survival tip. listen to the drip drip drip. enjoy the soft light of winter. upgrade the ugg boots. buy a long sleeve woolen spencer. rug up, find some bush, thrill at a cold drop finding its way in despite all the layers down your back. wear a woolen beanie
Apart from chocolates and soup, my favourite thing is to curl up in a nice warm pair of flannelette pjs: complete with ugg boots. Not a good look, but very comforting!
Thanks Maureen, perhaps I should just follow the sun and move every six months! That was a nice daydream:-)
Karen, I’m motivated right now to get clear so I can put an order in for Mothers day too!
feline, fortunately I haven’t seen the pants at half mast recently – we can only hope that phase has passed. Almost scared to say that! And that cool drip, yep, I remember it well as it travels through the warmth quite distinctly – thanks for that reminder.
Tracey flanette pjs must definately be on the list. Mmm I need new ones too and slippers, the other good thing about winter is you look so daggy you nest at home more.
Is it that kids are not taught at home to look after themselves? This is coming from the point of view of a mum. My eldest had his first school camp this week and he was surprised at some things that couldn’t do for themselves or expected someone else to do, for example pack up their sleeping bag or butter their toast.
Planning Queen, you could be right! It surprises me sometimes the lack of basic skills I see at school. Perhaps too much of the ‘parent’ comes out in me:-) I have seen some gradual improvement though and now I just need to point to the offending item and it is quickly adjusted. It’s not a part of my job that I really want to focus on to be honest! Uniforms – who would have thought I would ever get fixated on that!
