My Home on Google Street View
When I read about Google Street View, I was almost late to work, due to having to check out my house. I didn’t expect that my street in my regional town would have been included in this mass photographing. It was! I was quite surprised. It must have been in summer because the lovely big tree out the front of my home had leaves. Fortunately my lawns were mowed and my home looked tidy!
You can get the link to your street view or have an embed, if you want to put it on your blog. I don’t- but hey, you might. I feel awkward putting photos of my kids on my blog to be honest. My son put’s plenty of himself on his myspace, but I am just not there yet! It may change one day. I was never going to put my own photo online, and I have, so perhaps I’m just slow to expose myself.
Privacy is an interesting concept now though itsn’t it? Snoskred’s post So You Think You’re Anonymous on the Internet hightlights how wrong you are to believe that using another name, or the blanket anonymous doesn’t hide you. In the video I watched on Saturday, Kevin Kelley said all searches were recorded. I wonder if people realise how much their activities are monitored. It’s kind of like all the surveillance videos and satellites though, who is watching, who could be bothered? It’s just that it’s possible I guess…

Oh.
My
God.
We just viewed our place. My car wasn’t in the driveway. The kids said,”Let’s see if your car is in the car park at school.”
We looked. We zoomed in. There it was.
I’m so creeped out right now…..
I did a post on this about a year ago … I really hate it to be honest. I have a real problem with the lack of our privacy … it’s kind of creepy.
Having said that, I’m glad your yard was tidy when it was captured for the entire world to see! lol
Well, if I had known they were coming to take a picture, I would have stood outside in my birthday suit and waved.
That is all really weird.
I’m not sure if it bothers me. I think if someone is that interested in stalking me and they know my address….they can drive over and see for themselves.
I’d rather them just sit at their computer and look at my house via google.
I want to go and find my childhood homes!!!
Frogdancer, I’m not sure where my car was… school was deserted!
Drowsey Monkey, this is day one in Australia! Google street view was just released yesterday.
Dina : that is a good idea, check out all the places you used to live.
I’m not really sure what I think of it. Most of the kids in my classes had checked out their houses yesterday so there must have been huge traffic on Google Maps!
Spoke to a friend yesterday who had her home ransacked and car stolen from out front last Saturday night. She and her daughter were home (and asleep) at the time! Of course… it had nothing to do with Google Street View but I can’t help but wonder if this sort of access will give rise to even more crime… offering those with the inclination… the technological edge to “case the joint” in a far off distant neighbourhood… from the comfort of their own (or someone else’s previously stolen) computer screen!
There are breaches of privacy everywhere. You are right to be concerned Joh.
