Full Moon in Leo – Saturday January 30th

Last full moon of the year 2009 & a Blue Moon ...Image by H G M via Flickr

This full moon finds me feeling quite hopeful and positive. Going back to work wasn’t as stressful as I’d anticipated. I feel calm about it. There is plenty to learn and I like that. I enjoy not knowing, it keeps me interested:-) I’ve been warmly welcomed by the staff and many have been helpful. It makes all the difference. Actually I think it is going to be fun!

It’s my mum’s birthday today. I’ll visit her this morning and enjoy some time with her. I lean on my parents, still. It’s changed over the years and now although they don’t provide the same support they did as a child, I still go to them when I need encouragement in all kinds of areas of my life. They are always available to me. I am blessed. Tom returned to Hamilton Island yesterday. I draw on the strength my mum has demonstrated to me over the years having to let go of 6 of us and watch us all lead our own lives in all the different ways we have chosen.

Lynda Hill’s Sabian Symbols article on this full moon is titled Feeling Safe Secure and Loved, and Moments of Inspiration . It is a delicious read and promises lots of lovely energies for this moon. If you want more evidence of the joy and spontanaity of this moon read Girl finds Romance: Loses Mind on Moonkissd by Jessica.

I have a 21st to go to tonight and I expect it will be fun!

Returning to Work

I’ve improved. I used to say returning to school, or I’m going to school, or I can’t wait till school finishes this term. My daughter would frequently point out to me that the school was my work and it was her school. Now that my children are no longer at my school, I can see clearly that it is my work.

The good thing about school today was going to my new office and seeing fresh paint and a new chair that presumeably no-one has sat on. It’s in a new purpose built centre for the year 12′s. It looks great.

The awkward thing about today is that I feel like it’s my first day at school and I feel like know nothing. That can’t be true though:-) There are lots of familiar faces and when the students return on Monday there will be plenty more, because I’ve taught plenty of them. It’s exciting to be challenged by the unfamiliar.

Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Yesterday was one of my favourite days of the holidays. Asha came for lunch and we hung out for a few hours together, just talking and laughing and eating. Darin cooked salt and pepper squid and prawns and it was marvellous.

Tom arrived home shortly after Asha left. He’d spent the day sleeping off the festivities from his first night back here. He was as usual accompanied by his friends and Darin made a delicious bbq of the leftover seafood and some chicken we had. He astounds me how he can put together a feast when I think I have nothing in the cupboard. Tom played this song for me and I immediately fell in love with it.

I went to bed last night about to explode with all the food I’d eaten and pleased to have spent great time with my kids.

The Language of Archetypes by Caroline Myss

Cover of Cover via Amazon

Yesterday I finished listening to “The Language of Archetypes” from Caroline Myss. I have read ‘Anatomy of the Spirit‘ by the author many years ago and found it facinating. This talk was enjoyable also. I loved her directness and humour. She spoke confidently and forcefully about the archetypes. She is born the same day as me, although some years earlier. It’s no wonder I found her so easy to listen to!

I’m still musing on what my archetypes and lessons are. This review by Janet Boyer describes in more detail what the series is about if you are interested. Unlike Janet, I haven’t read everything there is to read by Caroline Myss so I was rather captivated by this series and frequently laughed aloud whilst listening. I think I will get my hands on ‘Sacred Contracts’ in the near future, hopefully as an audio because I really enjoyed her voice.

Study

I got my letter today to say I got into the course I applied for last year. I’m doing an ICT Education course at Charles Sturt by distance ed. I have an envelope full of forms to fill out. I feel a bit reluctant about it to be honest. I haven’t found universities to be the best places to learn, but I haven’t done any formal studies since the 90′s so I’m keeping an open mind about it. It may have changed. I’ll let you know:-) I hope it will assist me to be a better teacher in IT, instead of learning from my students all the time.

I went to the senior campus today to get a bit organised but it didn’t work. There weren’t many people about and I just don’t really know enough about the place to be able to do much. I got a map though so I should be able to find my way to my classes.

Pause

I wish I could press pause on the holidays. I want the time to last longer. There is so much I am just beginning to get into after unwinding, celebrating, tripping off to Sydney and now the holidays have shrivelled up and there’s only a week left. How did that happen?

I am listening to an audio book each morning by Caroline Myss, called ‘The Language of Archetypes’. She speaks with authority and I am enjoying it a lot. She also injects humour into her conversation. I appreciate that. I have also started reading ‘Blink’ by Malcolm Gladwell. I picked it up in a second hand book shop in Sydney. It’s facinating. I hate to admit this but I had over 900 saved blog posts in my feed. I’ve been steadily reducing that number each day.

Last year we had lots of after school meetings and I believe it seriously inhibited my learning. My routine was to come home from school and pursue things of interest online and generally stay in touch with the wider world. By the time I got home from work I’d had enough of the wider world and just wanted to do home and family things.

I’ve also started exercising again. It always feels so good but when I am tired I just don’t make the time. I intend to be firmer with myself about that and perhaps get up earlier in the mornings to get it done.

Tom will be home on Friday. This time he’s staying for a week! I’m excited to see him, but I don’t want to wish any day of this lovely unstructured time away.

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Feriss

I bought this book for Tom last year when he was doing VCE. The way he was studying I thought he could do with some alternative income producing strategies. Turns out I needn’t have worried. He left the book behind when he left for Airlie Beach. I started reading it when I was on long service leave, I finished it over the last couple of weeks. It’s about creating real freedom in your life.

That money loses it’s power when you don’t have time to enjoy it and freedom to learn and enjoy each day is clear.  The ’4-Hour-Work-Week’ is full of strategies to minimise the time you spend ‘at work’. It’s an entire different philosophy and one I really like. I’m pretty convinced I couldn’t be a teacher in my current system and apply some of the most appealing suggestions in this book. I remain optimistic that could change or I could change positions. There is still plenty of useful information in the book for me. It inspired questions about lifestyle and that’s always a good thing.

The book has plenty of links and resources. I was impressed with that part of it. I liked he didn’t tell everything but left signposts to pursue things of further interest. It was funny. I enjoyed, in the middle of some dry information, was a bit of a laugh to be had… it kept me interested. I felt my time was respected reading this book.

One of the main things I enjoyed about the book was his outlook on learning. It’s functional and meaningful to him. He loves learning. There are some excellent strategies for learning on all levels in his writing, among other things. I have been doing a bit of reading over the holidays about learning, mostly online.  I’ve favourited some in the technoratti tags on this page.  I should have been reading school text books and writing up lesson plans for the five new subjects I have to teach next year. I will immerse myself in the curriculum soon enough!

Tim Ferriss has a blog and has recently republished the book with an expanded version. The disclosure page makes me smile. He has an irreverent voice that I enjoy.

Austinmer and the Grand Pacific Drive

We went to Austinmer whilst I was away. We intended to get a kebab from the shop across the road from that lovely beach. The header of this blog was taken at that beach when I had a holiday in Wollongong. I enjoyed that spot. It was very busy this visit, so we went further down the road and enjoyed a quieter beach off the main road. Lying on the beach reading and dipping into the waves each time I got to hot was how the majority of the day was spent.

We took the Grand Pacific Drive, which I had been keen to do last time I was there, yet never made it that far up. It is a great road that runs along the coastline. We also called into a few galleries, which were impressive.

New Moon in Capricorn – Solar Eclipse – Friday 15th January 2009

The New Moon eclipse tomorrow will be a more fitting start to the new year as new moons are about new beginnings. Having a full moon on New Years Eve and the reality of that time of year is more suited to partying! I am spending time today reflecting on my goals and intentions for myself. Interestingly my feelings and interests are corresponding to my astrology. Whilst I was away I didn’t do much reading about astrology. I read a book (to be reviewed at a later date) and spent a lot of time reflecting without the barrage of information I consume daily online.  When I got home and read the astrological trends I found they matched the directions I have pondered for myself during my little internet fast.

A big event this eclipse particularly for Capricorns. I have a couple of articles for you to read more about it. Lynda Hill’s Sabian Symbols is a promising interpretation of the skies. A more detailed and complex discussion of this event is on Aquarius Papers, it contains links to many other articles if you want a lot to ponder. There are plenty of good articles being written about this eclipse and most of the links in the ‘skies and numbers’ category in The Well have mentioned this event in their recent blog posts.

I Love Sydney

Ferry RideWe arrived in Sydney late Thursday night and I met Darin’s parents for the first time. They were warm and welcoming. I felt immediately at home. During my stay I met friends and family and enjoyed their humour and generous hospitality. I was nervous contemplating meeting so many new people, yet I needn’t have been.

I spent one day racing around Sydney with Darin. Sydney is beautiful. We caught the ferry from just near the Rocks to Manly. I loved cruising through the harbour seeing the properties lined along the shore, as well as the iconic bridge and Opera House. I couldn’t imagine ever getting to work or school if I caught a ferry everyday. I think I would head straight to the beach.

It’s a whole new experience being here with someone who knows their way around. I’ve been to Sydney twice before. Once for a Feng Shui course in Glebe on a rainy long weekend and another time for a Karate competition with my kids. I saw very little on both trips and had no idea how great Sydney was to be honest.

We went all over Sydney and I got to eat lots of delicious things. I think the dim sims are the thing I’d like to see most here in Victoria. They are delicious, full of veges and opposed to our dim sims, taste fresh.

Darin has a similar pace as I do, he is on the move and we packed heaps into our days. Traveling there by car was also a pleasant surprise. We both made CD’s for the trip and in amongst lively discussions enjoyed listening to each other’s music. It was the most comfortable long drive I’ve had with someone to be honest. I’ve left out plenty, but I’m unpacking and relaxing into being home right now, so maybe later:-)
