Sharing Blogging with Teachers

Tonight went ok I guess. It reminded me of when I was in adult education teaching beginners computer lessons. Some have a reasonable skill level and will dive in and have a go. The people I feel for are those who are completely out of their depth. Every instruction needs to be explained and in some cases to create some momentum, done for them.

I don’t think it is impossible for anyone to learn how to use a computer, or to blog, if they want to. It is a big IF though. My mum has learnt to use facebook to stay in touch with my overseas sister. I heard on the weekend my dad is doing footy tipping online. I have helped them both out on the computer, they have slowly become more competent, yet I imagine this game my dad is playing will have him build skills faster because it’s something he enjoys. I have watched Darin’s mum learn how to use skype, to connect with her grandchildren who live interstate, in a short period of time. She wanted to do it badly enough that she kept at it. She asked lots of questions. She enjoyed some success when it worked and now I reckon she could guide someone else to do it.

The resistance I find when introducing new things to any student, is always the problem. The reluctance to make a mistake leads to them to stick with what they know. I have no idea what it is like because I have gradually expanded my skills over years. I wanted to learn. I made plenty of mistakes and then corrected. I have in no way made all the mistakes yet, there is still bucketloads more I don’t know. I remember this game I played a long time ago called the maze game. It was played in teams and you had to navigate your team through a grid that sometimes changed. People would stand there, with their foot up in the air afraid to put it down, because if it was wrong, you had to start all over again. The lesson was to make the mistakes quickly by just having a go. The quicker you made the mistake, the quicker you would get it right in the end. I wish I could find the instructions to that game and play that with some classes. It is a lesson that could make all learning come easier. So many of us have been taught to avoid making mistakes.

Some are not just learning blogging, they are learning a whole range of skills, even how to use a keyboard.  If they are that disinterested in computers, when they have been around them for so long, I feel a bit of personal frustration to think I can share much with them at all. It is going to take time and practise for them to be competent enough to use them in a classroom. I doubt they have the time or the interest to practise. I know I shouldn’t make assumptions about students and I don’t weigh up young people like that as I have tonight with the adult learners.

All in all though, it is a start.

Full Moon in Scorpio – Wednesday 28th April 2010

Everything I’ve been reading about this Scorpio full moon talks about intimacy, transformation and intensity. It’s been a gradual thing also according to what I read and will last for a little while yet. Moonkissd’s post is a good read. Astrogrrl’s post this moon is about the transformative energy.

Tomorrow after work I’m helping the teachers at my school with blogging. I thought this time would never come when teachers at my school would show a genuine interest in using blogging as a tool in the classroom. When I started this blog back in 2005, I thought it would be great to use with students. I’ve had a dabble a couple of times over the years, with varying success. My original evangalistic approach has died down, but I will be interested to see what others do with it. I must admit I don’t put as much time into this blog as I once did. I still like to keep it for an occasional dabble though.

I had a great weekend. I spent Saturday catching up with a mate for a few drinks (I had intended returning the favour of helping her to paint, but we didn’t paint) and then Darin and I went out when he got home from work. We headed to town on Sunday, making our way to my brothers for the evening. Enjoyed a coffee with Wilma and Darryl on the way and checked out quite a few display homes for ideas. I want to get serious about improving things around my home this year, so it was great to check out what’s around in homes. We saw a couple of ideas we liked. What was really good was that we like the same things. I really hate compromise, it’s lovely to have similar taste as Darin.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr

There is nothing more blissful than snuggling up on the couch with R (3) and reading ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We have read it so many times now that I leave the last word in the sentence for her to complete. She knows it off by heart as the cliche goes. She loved this book so much that when I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, it was a tiger.

We first got this delightful picture book about a tiger who eats it’s way through a delightful tea party from the library. R(3) loved it so much that I had to get it for her for Christmas. My favourite idea is that the tiger (after drinking all the tea, the milk, the orange juice and all Daddy’s beer, drinks all the water out of the tap. So much so that she can’t have a bath! What a concept!

Judith Kerr has an interesting life story. She also wrote the Mog books which you may be familiar with. I just like her surname :-) because my longest friend shares it.

Fancy Nancy by Jane O’Connor

Having 3 young children in my life again, has allowed me to indulge one of my greatest pleasures in life… picture books! I bought them a book each for Christmas (amongst things they said they wanted :-) )and whilst I was reading them to them over the weekend for perhaps the 100th time (hyperbole!), I realised I hadn’t blogged about these treasures. So I have to share with you.

‘Fancy Nancy’ was the perfect choice for E(5) who is a bit fancy really and has brought that little girl glamour back into my life. She adds glitter to everything, will wear a frilly dress oblivious of the weather or need for comfort and epitomises ‘Fancy Nancy’ in her day to day life. It’s just gorgeous.

There is a whole series of ‘Fancy Nancy’ books which are just a monument to that stage in a little girl life when glamour is paramount! If you want a taste of what I mean, take a look at the Fancy Nancy Books site. I remember Asha at around this age surrounded by fairies and star wands and glitter of course. It’s such a magical time.

I have just ordered the I Can Read “Fancy Nancy Sees Stars” for E. I can’t wait to read it to her.

Blissful Weekend

Just when I thought winter had crept in, this weekend was a sunny, welcome one. It kick-started for me on Friday when Asha surprised me at school bringing a box of delicious muffins for me for lunch. I got to show her my new office and we caught up. She popped around after school and I am really pleased she is going to be around for a couple of weeks while she does her placement here.

Darin got home early so we had a great Friday night together. The kids came Saturday morning and I have enjoyed their company for the weekend. I love hearing them talk to their nanny in Sydney on Skype. Technology is so fantastic for keeping people in touch. We went to the park and enjoyed the weather. We fed the ducks and they had another fish, this time no carps lost their lives. It brightens my time having these three little people around with their unique personalities.

I talked to Tom tonight. He sounds well. I saw some photos on facebook taken by one of his friends who went to visit. I miss him. This is probably the longest time I have gone without seeing him. He won’t be home till after his birthday now.

This week will be busy. We have a Marist basketball carnival at school so there will be plenty on. I feel very happy at work now. I got a laptop from school on Thursday. Now I can leave mine at home and not have to lug one around as much. I think the improvement in technology at school has also added to my enjoyment. I have been waiting for this for so long. On Friday one of my students created an excellent documentary for his Local History project. It excites me to think what they will be able to do now they have the tools. I think there is greater independence and engagement in their learning.

Dick Smith + I-Tunes = Not Happy

Darin and I spend a bit on music. He bought a $50 itunes card today from our local Dick Smith Electronics store to complete a few albums we have downloaded from itunes. He got it home, scratched the back and the number was indecipherable. Annoying!

He returned to the store and they told him he would need to contact itunes. He (naturally) asked to speak to ’someone’ who said that itunes had collected all the faulty ones last week. Well obviously they missed one! Dick Smith wouldn’t give him a refund even though it was clear and obvious the card was faulty. He has emailed itunes and received an automated email to say they’ll get back to him within 24 hours. Really I think it sucks.

From now on, we’ll be buying our itunes vouchers from places that have it printed on receipts.

New Moon in Aries – Wednesday 14th April 2010

The new moon in Aries is the beginning of the astrological year. Make your wishes accordingly. Lynda Hill’s Sabian Symbols for this moon has all the different things going on in the skies with various planets.

I have felt in a bit of a shadow these last few days. The weather has been cold. My house has seemed so empty, probably after Easter and all the activity. I’ve felt unmotivated, but today it has began to lift. Going back to school, worrying about Asha not having a placement (although she now has one) or missing Tom because I haven’t seen him for so long that phonecalls have become not enough. I always run through all the possible reasons. I think sometimes you just have to have those dullish days. I was amused to read Mystic Medusa’s post today “Dark Moon Montage”. It described the way I had been feeling, although I was over it and able to enjoy the description today.

I spoke to Ash tonight and was pleased to hear she had good news and a selection of placements. She also has been given tickets to Mama Mia from one of her employers who was pleased with her work.

I watched ‘New Moon’ tonight whilst Darin was at work. This time last year I was reading that series. I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first film, but it was ok.

Empty House

Darin’s gone back to work, his parents and children have returned to their respective homes. I am home alone. It’s very quiet here. I’ve enjoyed a great Easter with a house full of people. I have eaten too well and laughed and shared stories, stayed up too late and now it’s all over. It’s so heart warming to me to watch the kids with their grandparents. I had a great relationship with mine, and watching them brought back those wonderful, indulgent times that grandparents are renown for:-).

I feel lucky to still have a few days holidays to enjoy.

Daylight Savings Ends

I had a trial run this morning. After it was suggested to me that it was an hour earlier, I turned the clocks back and got on with my day. Eventually I realised it was only Saturday!

I wish Daylight Savings would start in the school holidays and end during the term. Imagine that Monday morning with an extra hour of sleep. By the time I get back to school, a week later, I’ve already adjusted. As much as I enjoy the longer daylight after school, when Daylight Savings starts during the term, as it always seems to, I find it hard to get up that hour earlier.

Unhappy at Work?

I just read an interesting post on our ability to be happy at work: Shrink Rap: Psychologists Search for the Secret of Happiness at Work. When I say it was interesting it is because I have heard this before in an anecdotal way when I began teaching. A senior member of staff said to me that no one leaves our place of employment unless they are unhappy with their personal life.
