My Privacy and Facebook

I’m not leaving facebook today. At the risk of insulting the 26565 committed leavers (as of 9.50pm tonight), I am not sick of facebooks lack of respect for my data. On occasion I am sick of facebook users lack of respect for their own data though. The definition of privacy is to be separate from others or not seen by others. The very act of having a facebook account is to share with others or interact. I understand that selling our data to others wasn’t what we signed up for, yet it was kind of obvious to me it was going to go that way. Nothing is free!

The thing about facebook, twitter, youtube, blogging, and all the stuff we do online is that it is not private. It’s not hidden. We really need to know that. No one can get information about you that you don’t give them though. There is no one with a gun to your head telling you to reveal all the ups and downs of your life or your breakfast preferences. You willingly provide that information or preference. There are no paparazzi following you and photographing your family and all the things you like to do and publishing them to the world….you do that yourself.

I think it is the myth of privacy online that we need to quit. I feel my privacy could be invaded if my phone calls were listened into or if there was video surveillance cameras that I wasn’t aware of. Satellites have concerned me because I can’t see them and I am not aware of what they are watching. I was a bit startled by Google Street View, when it came to my town. I felt that was potentially an invasion of privacy.

People only know what you tell them, or show them. If you want something to be private, keep it to yourself.

Have Your Say about Education

I’m relatively confident those who are interested or have children know that the Australian Government has come up with a new Curriculum. I have been reading it this week whilst I’ve been off work unwell. I don’t know that I would have had time to otherwise to be honest. It would be great if lots of people did respond to the call for feedback. Click here if you are interested. Yes, you have to register, yes, it’s a lot of reading… if you’re not in the education ‘field’, there are probably words you’ll have to look up~but really, if you’ve ever complained about schools, teachers or education today…. I think …. here’s your chance! These are the documents that teachers in your kids classrooms will use to guide the learning that happens in the classroom.

I hope there is a great diversity of ideas and feedback. I have my own ideas, but I believe everyone does, and that’s how things can improve. We need to express ourselves about the important things. There are only a couple of days left to do it and I’m sorry really that I didn’t share this earlier, but I honestly hadn’t had a chance to check it out.

I watched something awesome this week on TED talks. “Sir Ken Robertson:Bring on the Education Revolution” says it all. I loved what he said. I felt less alone in my thinking. Watch it:

His previous appearance at TED talks “Do Schools Kill Creativity?” is also well worth a watch and perhaps should be viewed first.

I am very excited about the potential for the future of education, but I want to yell “HURRY UP” at times.

Full Moon in Sagittarius – Thursday 27th May 2010

At 11ish tonight is the full moon, or it could be tomorrow. I’ve read conflicting reports. Anyway…. it’s full … it’s sag (so fire) and apparently going to reveal truths. Sorry to be brief!

Love is a Verb

Those that go searching for love only make manifest their own lovelessness, and the loveless never find love, only the loving find love, and they never have to seek for it.

Girlo’s Check this out

One of my favourite authors for young women attempting to navigate their way in the world is Anthea Paul. Her Girlosophy books are a great read and I’ve never given one to a young woman at school without having her rave about how much it made her feel better about herself. That is surely all that needs to be said to recommend them to you.

There is a new Girlosophy website! There are some great links and articles on there as well as groups. I can’t rate her and the work she does highly enough.

I think girls of all age deserve to indulge themselves in Anthea Paul’s philosophy on living on your own terms.

If you leave me, can I come too?

Tom went today. He’s flying back to the tropical paridise he calls home early in the morning and staying with Asha tonight. He was very happy to be going too. He wrote on his blog (that has been VERY neglected whilst he’s been up there) that he has promised himself not to return in winter again. That, I must say is just rubbing it in! His braces however mean he will probably have to. I’m guessing he won’t stay as long though. I could tell he was itching to get back there. I am happy for him, but I wonder if I shouldn’t try life in a warmer climate. Only kidding, I’m very happy here with my seasons:-)

I went back to school in a bit of a numb state and was glad to hear the bell go at the end of the day. I have come home and completed a fair bit of stuff that I had neglected while he was here. I think by the end of the week my varied climate life will have returned to it’s natural order.

He’s Home

I’m feeling unprofessional this week. Tom is home and I really can’t concentrate properly on being a teacher. I want to be home with him every minute of my day. I want to rush out of meetings and I feel annoyed with anyone who asks an additional question that could perhaps hold the meeting up a minute or two. I really don’t want to be there.

I collected him from the airport this time. Bad move. The overwhelmed tears I usually shed in the privacy of my home were spilled out at the airport. It was so great to hug him. We chatted all the way home. It’s been so lovely to see him for the past few days. He hasn’t gone out as much as he usually does when he’s home. We’ve had meals together. We went to the place Darin works last night and it was really yum. He’s really feeling the cold. He’s shopping and sleeping, catching up on the things he misses out on at Hamilton Island I guess.

I think he is intensely happy there. He talks about his friends and the things they do with a light in his eyes that I recognise as good. His people from Hamo call him and his face lights up. He leaves me tomorrow to return to those good times and I am happy for him that he has found a place where he can thrive.

Fridge Full

Darin has the weekend off and the kids are here. It’s been a while since he’s been home for the weekend. He has cooked here this afternoon and my fridge is now bulging with yummy food and my stomach is full of dinner that was amazing.
My parents took off today on their winter escape. It’s great to seeing them enjoy this lifestyle. I slept in this morning and thought I had missed them, but luckily bumped into them in the supermarket.
I feel full of gratitude for my life today. This afternoon was a beautiful sunny autumn one and all the huge trees around were showing their colours. The air and light in autumn inspires contentment in me. The kids were playing happily and I got a wonderful text message from Tom. These are the days:-)

New Moon in Taurus – Friday 14th May 2010

Rest up for the coming new moon tomorrow at 11.00ish. Get the goals out for this new moon. Mercury is going forward and according to Mystic Medusa: Coming Soon: The Quickening the coming time is going to be faster! Where does she get her brilliant images from ?

I think there has been a quickening with our local plumber. When you need a plumber to do something you want, you often wait weeks for them to have the time. Not this time when it involves a massive bill with nothing to show (well nothing other than waste effortlessly leaving the house – not such a small thing I guess…). I have perhaps taken sewerage for granted throughout my life!  A phonecall Monday and they arrive this morning. As it is in the dark of the moon I hope that translates to an end to such annoying expences that leave me with no aesthetic pleasure.

It seems fitting that Astrogrrl says the Taurus New Moon is about issues of material security as that is a bit of a focus for me at present. I’ve been reading Frogdancer for a while now and she reminds me of the delicate balancing act of raising kids as a single parent. I was never as innovative and resourceful as she is though and I am inspired by her genius. I was more careful and conscious then. It’s as though the lack of orthodontist bills, school fees, reduced costs in general have made me think I have an endless pit or something. I never say no to myself these days and clearly… I ought to!
