Move Over Margaret and David….

I love ‘At the Movies’. It’s one TV show I watch when I can. That’s probably because I love film. I like how they disagree with one another too. It’s interesting to get differing perspectives.

If you fancy yourself as a film critic, Quickflix is launching a brand new entertainment TV show on Channel 9’s GO channel, starting on November 6 and in the build-up they’re giving one lucky person the chance to co-host the show and work alongside one of Australia’s most recognised names (who we can’t tell you about…just yet).

The job will involve interviewing some of the world’s biggest movie stars, casting a critical eye over the latest movies and DVD releases, as well as doing red carpet events. There’s also some great training and the winner will receive on-the-job production and presentation training, and get paid $1,200 per week for five weeks’ work.

Basically the dream job for a movie lover.

I love these competitions for dream jobs. Remember that Hamilton Island Bloggers job? I think that was before Tom started working there. If you like the idea, have a go! Here are some useful links: sign up and a video explanation

So, I still don’t have a laptop- grrr Acer!

OK, so what I have learnt about being without a laptop and the internet by association, is that I rely on it for a lot of things. It makes life easier and more enjoyable for me. Perhaps I’ve come to take it for granted, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate it:). Yeah I have learnt how to do a lot more on my phone, and I appreciate that too, it makes me even more connected than I was before. Actually I don’t know if I do appreciate that! The thing is you can’t know less and I’m sure it could be useful.

Grrrr… the latest news is that I have to pay for recovery disks because my laptop is out of warranty now! In the space of a couple of weeks of being without a laptop because of a fault that was under warranty and getting it back and then not creating recovery disks, I have found myself without a laptop again for an extended period of time. I use my laptop a lot. I’m bloody annoyed. I can’t even begin to say how annoyed I am and how much I’ve learnt from this experience, so I’ll just get on with saying what I need to say.

I’ve had a great Easter. We had the kids for most of the break, which was lovely. We went fishing twice. The first time we got rained out at the sandbanks. The next day we went out along the creek and had fun skimming stones but no fish were to be lured by our noisy and fun loving party:). Next time! There were some great stone skimming feats and I think that was the more fun activity of the day. I would love to share the photo’s, but alas the laptop I am borrowing doesn’t have the software!

We got to watch some great films due to the bad weather. Up! What a classic. I will never forget seeing it at the cinema in 3D with Darin and J(who was about 8 at the time). Darin and I kept looking at each other and at Jack. I cried and laughed. It’s a great film. We watched ‘Holes’. I love that I get to share all my old favourites again with Darin’s kids.  The kids went home to their mum’s cause it was her turn this year for the Easter bunny, and they returned the afternoon to have the hunt here. It was lovely to spend time with them and enjoy the chocolately indulgence.

I did manage to work on the clip for Tom’s 21st using my expandable hard drive and Darin’s laptop. I am not a big fan of lengthy speeches(particularly if I have to make them). I made a clip for Asha’s 21st of photos and songs that I felt were meaningful to her. People asked for a copy of it, so I felt that it was effective. I got good feedback:). I find times like that very emotional so I find it easier to just press play on something I prepared earlier, than to speak. I am so excited about Tom’s 21st. I haven’t been to Hamilton Island before so that’s exciting in itself. I hope he will let me publish it to the family once he’s seen it, cause I know many won’t be able to make it to the party and yet would love to enjoy the occasion. I know I have loved seeing photo’s of events I haven’t been able to attend.

Dan Millane – Come Together and other current fancies…

Darin introduced me to this guy on You Tube this morning. I quite like him. As it turns out he will be playing near us over the next few months, so we aim to go see him probably at Warragul when a child free, work free weekend crops up.

I enjoy covers. There are so many great ones. We both look for them. Triple J’s ‘Like a Version’ is sometimes great. I am still disappointed that I can’t download ‘Josh Pyke – Under the Milky Way’ on itunes.

During the week we went to one of our local pubs to watch a past student in a band. I always admire artists the courage it takes to put themselves out there and I enjoyed it.

Last night we started season two of ‘Breaking Bad’. It’s intense with rich characters and action. We watched about 5 episodes and I would have kept going except I want to make it last :-) . It is my favourite TV drama for a long time, so well made, and such bliss to watch it without ads!

Tomorrow When the War Began (film)

Tom and I went to see the film today. It was good. Our school had ‘Tomorrow When the War Began’ by John Marsden as the year 9 class novel for many years. I was tired of reading it and discussing it after ‘doing’ it for so many years. I almost didn’t bother to see the film, except I did enjoy it the first few times.

The film was great and I would almost like to reread the book to see whether the contemporary spin I felt had been put on the teenager characters was there in the beginning. I’m pretty sure there was no mention of mobile phones or the internet in the novel, yet it doesn’t matter and was smart of the filmmakers. I watched a bit of the ‘behind the scenes’ on the website and the director says John Marsden signed off on it as I can imagine he would. It was faithful to the spirit of the book.

When Tom and his friends came home from seeing it Tuesday night they asked me ‘Did you remember Chris as a stoner?’. I can’t say I did, but it doesn’t surprise me and I guess that was another of the written between the lines things that I possibly didn’t over emphasise with my students. I really probably should just reread it though.

Harry Potter

Asha and I went to gold class to watch ‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ this week. I missed Tom. I have such great Harry Potter memories with my kids. The most amusing was when we lived at our old house and the kids climbed up on the garage roof, with a chair each and read the books (they’d both bought one each) so I couldn’t con them out of it to read it myself. They were quite smug about it, ignoring my pleas from the ground with their noses in their books.

I enjoyed spending the day with Asha though. We met at the Jam Factory, had lunch and a shop, then finished off the day with the film. This film was different to the others. I think because the characters are older and the focus was more on relationships. I don’t think younger children will enjoy it as much as the other ones to be honest.

The kids are here tonight and we got the Wii game from the film. It’s got a different focus to the film and you have to collect things, play quiddich and make potions.

Use the Force

I love Star Wars. A while back one of my favourite astrologers Mystic Medusa alerted me to www.icanhasforce.com in this post about Retro Mercury. I enjoyed the picture and found one today to inspire me.

I continually have to work on my self-esteem, damn it all. Why can’t you just get it handled and have it stay handled! If anyone knows how to do that… feel free to give me your secret in the comments.

Wintry Nights

I have to go out tonight. We have an information session at school for potential mentors. I can’t believe anyone will turn up on a cold, wet and dark night like tonight. I’ve been dreading it since I got home. It’ll be better once I actually leave so I can stop the dread! Darin will cook dinner for us and I can look forward to that when I get home.

The Capricorn moon must be working it’s thing on me right now though because I have managed in this time to complete the ‘reports’ task I set for myself to do tonight. I didn’t do as much over the long weekend as I should have so it’s a relief to tick some boxes. Today was quite productive. I did break half a tooth though, so that kind of put me off my nougat chocolates that I’ve been consoling myself with. Looks like I’m going to have to switch to a mushier treat to get me through this week.

I am feeling more upbeat today than I have for a little while. I talked to Tom tonight and he sounds well. No work yet, but he has plans. He sounds healthier too and he assures me the warmth there is having a positive effect. I am happy with that. Darin and I went to see ‘My Year Without Sex’ yesterday. We drove to Southland. Those good films never make it here and I didn’t want to miss it. I really enjoyed it. I appreciated that he drove all that way for me in the cold and rain after having very little sleep the night before. His daughter was up during the night with a bad cough. Not only did he go to that effort, but he also enjoyed it with me. He is quite a lovely man.

Tamboritha clip

Finally got this clip uploaded today of the light snow at Tamboritha on the 21st of last month. It was very chilly. You can’t see it too well. The best sight of it was when we were playing the stalk the lantern game and shone the powerful spotlight up into the moonless sky. At that point I thought I was about to lose some of my extremities though, so I didn’t appreciate the view as much as I could have.

I have also put on Revver a clip of the drive up there, if you are interested you can compere the weather!

Country Races

This video came to my attention today. I haven’t been to the races for years, but this is a real slice of Australian experience in some parts, complete with fashion on the fields.

Videos to DVD

Up until my daughter went to secondary school, she was a fabulous performer. She was in the drama ensemble of the State Schools Extravaganza ‘Quest of the Birds’. She was a voice of one of the puppets and I was in total awe of her as she performed in front of such a large audience at Rod Laver Arena.

We also have a video of her performing at Movie World and in another primary school play where she played a villian with a Russian accent. She hated that role. She had to sing a song called ‘Bad Girl’ and she was never a bad girl – the opposite. She did a remarkable job though – small children would stop her in the street and call her ‘Olga’.

I attempted to show her boyfriend the videos recently. They were all grainy. I haven’t had them out for ages. I was really disappointed. None of the videos played very well. I have sent them off to have them converted to DVD. I just hope they work cause they are my treasures.
