Bonfire Night and the weekend

This weekend has been full. We had the kids this weekend and they went for a swim with their dad on the way home whilst I was still working. I got to have a quick beer with Cath and Scuzzi whilst admiring her new wood carving in her back yard. He’s done a great job transforming a tree into a sea eagle. I want one!!

Yesterday whilst I worked Darin and J(10) prepared a garden bed. I am really pleased because J knows a lot about gardening and often tells me about what he’s growing at home. I’ve always wanted a vege garden, so I have enlisted his help and enthusiasm. I am happy to weed and water when he’s not here. I’m very excited about that.
When I got home we went for another swim for a couple of hours. We arrived home famished and had a great meal of plum chicken and fried rice. We strolled down to the bonfire night and arrived seconds before the brilliant fireworks display began. It was perfect timing.

This morning we finished planting the vege garden, to be honest I just watched and enthused. After lunch we went for a drive to the beach to collect shells, we played in the waves. The kids slept on the way home and I am looking forward to my bed tonight.

Swimming Carnival

Today we had the swimming carnival at school. I enjoyed it despite having to be at the pool a bit earlier than I like to start my day. As Gold house co-ordinator I must say the captains of my house are committed young people who participated fully all day. I enjoyed the company of the students and staff. It was a great day in the sun.

I enjoy the vibe of the senior campus. I liked getting in the pool to get extra points for our house in the novelty events. It was a hot day…. I probably wouldn’t have been so keen on a cold one! I had a bit of a flash back to playing footy in the back yard with my brothers though as the ball landed near me and several athletic teenagers converged on me seeking the ball. I felt a little fragile in the crush of the youth, but managed to survive:-)

Warm Weather

I love it. I enjoy waking up and not feeling like I can’t face the outside of my bed because it is too cold. I love the brightness of a clear blue sky. I love swimming in cool water on a warm day. I love a cold drink after a hot day. I love wearing light clothes. I feel energised by the warmth. I feel happy and alive. I feel blessed thaqt I have places to swim and the energy to swim in them. I am lucky I have air conditioning if I need it.

A Five Minute Swim

Darin and I went to Inverloch after work tonight. It was 29 (by my car temp reading) on my way home from work. As we got closer, it was really smoky from just out of Leongatha. Not sure where the fire is in that area, but obviously something is still burning.

We had the beach to ourselves, well at least the car park, there were three other people in the water at the Inverloch Surf Beach. It was cooler there…. significantly. I thought I was going to be swimming alone for a short minute, yet he joined me eventually and basically we got wet and then got out. The tide was out so it was pretty shallow and not easy to have a swim in without going for a distance. It was invigorating though.

We had chips in town and a super big cappuccino from my favourite woman in Inverloch, then drove home. Lots of the trees along the way from Mirboo Nth to Driffield are burnt, yet I still got to smell some of that great dusk bush smell in parts and the light and shadows were lovely as ever.

A great kick start to the weekend.

Pretty Much Can’t Leave Town

Tom and his friends wanted to go to the beach this afternoon. I have pleaded with them not to go because I am worried about the fires. It’s ok for me to say that because I’ve spent the morning swimming in my friends pool. He just called me and said “Don’t worry mum, we pretty much can’t leave town.” Apparently every direction to the beach is road blocked. I am relieved they can’t, but it has never been this bad before and that’s a worry.

As much as I love warm weather I can hear helicopters and see close smoke in some  directions. It’s a bit extreme and windy. Last time I checked it was 45 in the shade outside. So many of our students live in the areas that are under threat from fires. I hope they are all ok.

I’ve been cranky the last couple of days. I am looking forward to the full moon/eclipse coming and going and hoping it will take my crankiness with it.

Swim, sleep and read

It’s still very warm here. There is smoke hanging in the air and I hope the people out in Mirboo Nth, Yinnar, Boolarra and surrounds are doing ok. It is eerie when it is hot and smokey like this. After swimming today Rhonda and I went down for a lemon tart and the streets were deserted.

My cousin got married this afternoon and I went to watch her enter the church on my uncles arm. She looked beautiful. I hope the high ceilings in the church made it cooler in there.

I’ve spent the afternoon reading the second in the Twilight series in the air conditioned room. They are thick books. I have nearly finished it though. I have been sleeping weird hours. Having a nap after school and then waking during the night and doing bits of stuff in the cooler more reasonable temperature.

I am not getting much done. The students will return to school on Monday and I don’t feel nearly organised enough. If it is this warm still though, I don’t imagine I’ll be able to do much with them. I say if, because despite the weather forecasts I am still hoping that all the ants around, means that rain will come and make the crackling environment a little kinder for the kids starting back. Hope is free!

In The Beginning – K’Naan

I have finished with that wallpaper! It was on the ceiling as well. I couldn’t paint over it because it was vinyl and had a revolting texture. Next task is to prepare the walls for painting.

I’ve been alternating between working around the house and having a day of leisure this week. Tomorrow I think I’ll just continue with getting the painting mission completed.

I’m loving this song right now.

Yesterday I visited my friend John.  Then we went to Wilma’s place for a swim and a BBQ. It was a great day. I was thinking about how close I feel to John. I feel totally at ease with him. I think it is because I met him during probably the lowest time of my life. He was always a bright part of that time. He knows plenty about me. Yesterday I learnt from his mum, that he played the clarinet and the sax when he was at school and he learnt that I was brought up a Catholic. Funny isn’t it when you think you know everything about someone and you learn something that surprises you. I also saw his new tattoos. They are amazing.

I Love Summer

Today has been very busy. I’ve caught up with my second cousin, Laurie, at my Auntie’s passing through on his way to Tasmania. I haven’t seen him since my grandfathers funeral last year and that was a blur. I visited Andy’s sister… who is also heading to Tassie and I dropped some stuff off for her to take to him. I enjoyed her gorgeous son, who is less than a year old. He was such a contented baby and it was peaceful to hang out with them.

Willy’s PoolI went to Wilma’s for a swim in her pool… and to spend time with her. It was blissful swimming the afternoon away.  I took this photo when I got out with wrinkly fingertips after soaking too long. I checked out my beautiful spare room there, that I intend to spend plenty of time in. We had a lovely steak and salad barbie, which was tasty, due to the swim induced hunger I reckon. I love spending time with her. Old friends are great are they not?

I had to come home tonight cause Tom is going to Pyramid Rock thingy and I wanted to see him before he goes. I don’t know why he can’t just stay home and watch TV on New Years Eve, would be less stressful for me!
